BATTLE BETWEEN MAJOR AC CABLES

I have many AC cables in my home, they are a courtesy of the Next Audio importer.
We have reviewed some of the finest AC cables currently available. Here they are:

  • Jorma Design Power Cord
  • Jorma Design Prime
  • LessLoss
  • Kubala Sosna Emotion

My Reference System #2 does not often vary in terms of devices, so I cam make a true comparison on a given part or device because I know it perfectly.
The methodology we used is described hereafter: all the devices are aligned in terms of AC phase (phase versus neutral), the AC power cords have all been verified to check if they do not invert the phase, then 4 reference CDs were listened to during 1 hour, and finally we performed the comparisons.

Each AC cable is positionned at the begining of the chain, between the AC outlet and the BLACK NOISE multi-outlets feeding the devices. I do not measure the impact on each component because my system is very "sensitive" and I can immediately identify if a difference occurs by doing the evaluation this way.
The other AC power cords feeding the CD player, preamp and power amp, are DIY cords based on a Belden cable. They are all the same.

1-.LESSLOSS.

The LESSLOSS was a true revelation on my WADIA 850 CD player, and this is the reason for which it is still on the website in the "Extra" section, "last exciting products".

This review proves that we should always deeply review the devices and always compare a product to its competitors. It is not totally rigid and is made of 3 conductors.

Build quality: 5/5
Price: 450€
Sound: see below

Pros:

  • build quality
  • the soundstage is wide
  • the price is very high, but not as high as some others...

Cons:

  • it does not correctly match with my system: the image is messy
  • the small details are not enough clear compared with its competitors

2-.KUBALA SOSNA EMOTION.

This one has been my favorite for 6 months. As my system was not really analogic because of my -slightly cold and acid- WADIA 850 CD player, it has balanced the overall sonic style of my system to something more "analogic" and "sweet". The Audio cooking is always a compensation affair...

Compared to its competitors, it is still part of the challengers, but....

Build quality: 4/5
Price: 1,300€
Sound: read below

Pros:

  • the tones in the medium are fantastic
  • it is sweet and never tiring
  • the bass is good and large
  • it sounds analogic

Cons:

  • the tones are ... too beautiful to be true
  • there is a sort of permanent small "fog" like in a church

3-.JORMA DESIGN POWER CORD

This cable is new but already burned in, and comes frm Sweden.
It has something partiular, a sort of small box housing a "secret" made in USA, used in some military applications; the ByBee, described on http://www.bybeetech.com

jorma_design_super_power.jpg

Build quality: 2/5
Price: 800€
Sound: see below

Pros:

  • speed and dynamic
  • tones, close to the concert ones
  • a lot of punch
  • a kind of magic in the notes
  • can be dry on some kinds of music
Cons:
  • a little acid in the trebble
  • the soundstage seems to be a lot closer
  • the packaging is poor

4-.JORMA DESIGN PRIME
It is the high end cable from JORMA. It has a beautiful look with a few gold reflections on its sleeve. Provided its price, it should be the one to beat !
It does not use the Bybee technique.

jorma_prime.jpg

Build quality: 4/5
Price: 2,750€
Sound: read hereafter

Pros:

  • very analogic
  • the end of the notes is superb
  • it never becomes tiring
  • the tones are very beautiful
  • the signal/noise ratio is excellent
  • the soundstage is truely excellent

Cons:
  • the price is....astronomical !
  • the bass is not as good as the rest
  • its speed is not enough
  • the packaging is unacceptable at this price

CONCLUSION:
I thought that the smal acidity of my system came from the Telefunken tubes i use on my JADIS JP80MC, but with this review I have identified the cause: the JORMA DESIGN power cord.
The AC power cords are essential to the musicality as soon as you own a high end system.

You should chose your AC cable depending on the current musicality of your system. To help you with this choice, I have classified these power cords in 3 categories:

Cat.1: the JORMA DESIGN PRIME and KUBALA SOSNA EMOTION.
They are sweet, they sound analogic, and they are never tiring.

Cat.2: JORMA DESIGN power cord.
It sounds like if you were in a concert, the soundstage in too close from you, and it has a lot f precision.

Cat. 3: LESSLOSS.
It sound large, but thee is a lack of detail.

Never forget that you should NOT buy this cable without having auditioned one in YOUR own system. The abovementioned comments are valid in my Reference System #2, and not on another system. I finally decided to chose the JORMA DESIGN power cord.

Just try and make your choice ! and to help you to share your experience or questions with other people, just use the dedicated topic we have created on the Forum...
