I-INTRODUCTION.

This is probably the very first complete review of the hotest 2014 Turntable: the new and long awaited REGA RP10 ! We have search for a site qould have already published a full review of the RP-10 and we have found none !

Although this model has been announced and introduced in the market on late 2013, there are a lot of photographies available around but still no full review on the specialized websites or magazines. I do not know why, but Threshold Lovers is very happy to (probably) be the first worldwide website to issue such a review.

This review also includes the CLEARAUDIO Basic Plus Phono preamplifier and the well known and famous SUMIKO Blackbird MC cartridge.

REGA has been one of the most famous turntables manufacturer for decades. The people who follow the Hi-Fi world since the 80's cannot have forgotten their REGA Planar 3 model, that has been their best seller at the time. This model was affordable, and has opened the world of the high fidelity to a lot of HiFi enthusiasts. In its price range, no other turntable could compete with this Planar 3. Of course there were turntables providing a better sound, such as the Revolver or the Linn Sondek LP12, but they were more expensive (often less reliable...) and out of the budget of a lot of persons. 
This Planar 3 was/is so good for the price, that it is still manufactured with a few improvements over the original model : look at the RP3 on the REGA website.

Another advantage of choosing REGA is that this manufacturer has been existing for more than 30 years, and will probably be there in a few decades: no reason to be afraid to no aftersale service or no spare parts because the manufacturer has disappeared... We would also like to mention that the replacement parts, such as the belts for example, are fully and easily available, at low cost...


II-.THE REGA RP10 TURNTABLE IN DETAIL.

But let us back to the « Queen », the RP10... As a lot of photographies are already available or provided by REGA itself, we do not have taken a lot of new photographies by ourselves, at least for the general overview of the REGA RP10 turntable.

This model is the latest evolution of the Roy GANDY design philosophy : low mass, high rigidity plinths, electronically regulated motor with low vibration, sophisticated platter and low mass tonearm are his principles and you can read these informations almost everywhere including on the REGA website.

The first thing that comes to mind when unpacking the REGA RP10 is : « Waouh: Beautiful, Superb, what a piece of engineering !...». The black glossy color of the chassis, the white platter and the aluminium toenarm, combined with the exoskeletal approach and a separated power supply, gives you the feeling that this turntable is not like the others: there is another way to adress the problems that is immediately palpable.
The second thing is a surprise coming from the weight: this turntable is very light ! Without the platter it is probably less than 3kg.... We immediately understand that there is some serious engineering to achieve such a light device.
The platter is a fully white ceramic piece, very soft, and we got the same feeling of a serious engineering from the manufacturer.
At the back of the RP10, you will find an (not removable) umbelical cord to be connected to the Power Supply, and a set of 2 RCA connectors coming from the tonearm. The RCA connectors are of the same type than the WBT (you have to screw them to get a proper contact with the preamplifier RCA female connectors), but they are lighter. Since the Eichmann Bullet RCA connectors have reached the market, we all know that the low mass RCA male connectors can be the best ... (at Theshold Lovers, the Eichmann are our absolute reference for the RCA male connectors, not for the female).

The RB2000 tonearm is a beauty. Regarding the RB2000 tonearm, be aware that REGA has recently slightly modified a piece of this tonearm to improve it. Our model was already equipped with this factory upgrade, but we have been informed that REGA offers this upgrade free of charge  to all their clients having bought a RP10 prior this upgrade is available, at least in France.
Regarding the compatibility, the French importer says that the cartridge weight should not exceed 12gr. The SUMIKO Blackbird MC cartridge that we use weights 9gr.


The RP10 Power Supply is separated from the turntable in a dedicated cabinet.

The front plate presents 3 buttons:

  • an On/Off button,
  • a 331/3rpm button
  • a 45rpm button

When the On/Off button is engaged, the REGA logo is enlighted in red color. Then press the desired speed and the turntable platter begins to turn. If you want to stop it without powering off the RP10, just press again on the speed button and the turntable stops. Simply cleaver.

The back plate houses the IEC connector, the fuse holder, and a sort of  XLR 4 pins female connector in which you should plug the umbelical cord coming from the RP10 itself.

Well, you know that Threshold Lovers always looks at "what is inside " !!...

The thick cabinet houses an electronically regulated power supply meaning that a DSP is used, 2 x 4,700µF 63V capacitors and a relatively small toroidal transformer rated probably around 30VA, but this is enough because powering a constant speed motor does not require the same oversized transformer than a power amp: the power consumption is constant. The upper plate of the cabinet is connected to the Earth by a cable for safety reasons: you just have to remove the attached plug if you need to put the upper plate far from the rest of the cabinet.
This Power Supply  is said to be manually adjusted to each RP10 motor: this proves that REGA tries to reach the best posible results with its new baby...

Back to the RP10 itself.
We have installed the RP10 on a Target Audio rack (no longer manufactured: made like a tank...), and of course we took care about the horizontality of the support. We did use the basement (and not only the skeletal) simply because I prefer to keep the dust away. Some websites or magazines tell that the RP10 performs slightly better without the basement, but believe us: you can use it without anxiety... The skeletal has no contact at all with the rest of the RP10, its main purpose is to offer the dust protection and a more classical rectangular look than the skeletal only.

The weight of the skeletal is simply incredible: we have never seen a so light turntable (without the platter). The new technologies used by Roy GANDY have reached the goal. If we did not know the level of expertise of REGA in designing turntables, we could have thought that the RP10 is too fragile for a serious listener....We could, but we did not. We have not enough mechanical expertise to discuss about the Roy GANDY approach: he explains that the mass is the ennemy except for the platter, and that the rigidity should be maximum. REGA is the only brand we know that tries to reduce the mass of the turntable whereas the other manufacturers often  increase the mass to the maximum: the approach is totally at the opposite, but believe us: the RP10 is more than a serious competitor, it is without a doubt the best REGA turntable ever made (see the listening section to understand what we mean)...

The skeletal of the RP10 looks very well made: no doubt that the skeletal principle, already used in the RP8 and the Naiad, is well known by REGA.Look at the part between the platter axis and the tonearm axis: it is a special plinth used to rigidify the skeletal and simultaneaously reduce the mass by making the big holes compatible with the required rigidity.

Everything has been done to reduce the mass of this skeletal, the 24V motor is near the counter platter, maybe to avoid the need of a bigger (and consequently heavier) skeletal ?. Therefore the belt is not long... well we must say the belts because there are two belts on the RP10. These belts are the white high performance belts that can be used as an upgrade for the older REGA models. We do not know why two belts are used on this RP10, but sonically, the results are there...

By comparing the size of the skeletal and the RB2000 tonearm, the tonearm looks pretty big aside.

With the rectangular turntable basement, the RB2000 looks serious. Its form factor is similar to the RB300, RB303, RB800 etc... that are the REGA previous tonearms. Its diameter is not small.
The mechanism used to move it up and down has a wonderful look and feel: when you pull down the crank to put the cartridge onto the disc, the RB2000 goes down slowly, so you do not have to care about how you move the crank, the RB2000 attached cartridge always reaches the disc softly.

REGA has deliver a lot of information on this new RB2000 tonearm, but no detailed information, saying that it is a big improvement over the previous REGA tonearms. It is said to be manually polished and there is no paint at all on it. The ball bearings are supposed to have very tight tolerance and REGA emphasizes on the fact that it is manually handcrafted because the tolerance are so tight that its assembly cannot be automatized.
On the previous REGA tonearms, a well known upgrade was to change the factory counterweight for a better model: on this RB2000 all the persons having tried this change reports that it should therefore be avoided because the original counterweight provides better musical results on the RB2000. The things have improved even if it is not easy to see by ourselves.

Our RP10 model has been equipped with a SUMIKO Blackbird MCcartridge feeding a CLEARAUDIO Basic Plus phono preamp.

III-THE SUMIKO BLACKBIRD MC CARTRIDGE.

SUMIKO
is well known American company, and has nothing to do with Japan contrarily to what you may suppose providing its name... SUMIKO manufactures 2 series of products: the OYSTER series and the Reference Series (for best performance). The Blackbird belongs to the Reference Series of SUMIKO, it is the first model in this category. Its price turns around $1,000.
The packaging is superb with a very detailed user manual and installation guide. The reviews of the Blackbird are very very good. A few people mentionned that it might be difficult to properly install, but we see no particular reason for that.

The cartridge setup has been done by a local REGA distributor located in Nice (France, Alpes-Maritimes), and named « Le Pavillon Musical »:

and we were lucky because Emile CLOSIER, the founder, is also a SUMIKO resseller !... so the setup is supposed to be perfect.

He has sold the first units of the RP10 back in December 2013, and he has a lot of arguments to promote the REGA turntables and the RP10 in particular. As a REGA resseller he knows very well all the REGA models and argues that the RP10 is better than the RP8 on almost every criteria. We will go back to him to discuss these points more in detail, after the RP10 listening sessions.


IV-THE CLEARAUDIO BASIC PLUS PHONO PREAMP.
 
For this REGA RP10 review we have used the abovementionned phono preamp.
The CLEARAUDIO Basic Plus phono stage comes in two identical boxes: one for the AC Power Supply and the other one for the preamp. Both boxes have the same size: 10,2cm(W)x13,4cm(D)x5,6cm(H).
It supports both the MM and the MC cartridges via two switches located on the bottom: one per channel letting us believe that it has a dual mono design. The 2 boxes are linked together by a computer RS-232 similar cable.
This preamplifier has an extremely good reputation, like for the SUMIKO Blackbird, but we have no confidence in the reviews and we always prefer to evaluate the products by ourselves.
An optional battery power supply module, named ACCU +, is available for the Clearaudio Basic Plus and will be reviewed in the coming weeks.

Like most of the phono preamps, the CLEARAUDIO Basic Plus is a small device and weights only 2.1kg. Its technical specifications are herebelow:

We suspect that the optional battery module should improve the signal to noise ratio (which is already excellent) so we will review it in the near future to check if it achieves an improvement in the final musicality.
The output level of the CLEARAUDIO phono preamp is pretty high and consequently the range of the volume potentiometer on the Line preamplifier is narrow: you cannot turn up the volume pot more than 1/4 unless you accept to have a problem with your neighbour...
So we have tried to switch the CLEARAUDIO from the MC position(gain = 62dB)  to the lower gain MM position (gain = 41dB), and have lessoned again.
The result is 100% clear: there is no longer the life and the magic that we have initially found !
So the conclusion is: you must use the MC position on the CLEARAUDIO Basic Plus phono preamp when using a MC cartridge such as the SUMIKO Blackbird.



V-.THE LISTENING SESSIONS.

It took me a lot of time before I decide to setup a new vinyl based system: the reason is that I have spent many years to carefully tune my CD based system. I am very satisfied with my CD Drive and my fully upgraded DAC. To date, I do not need all the fingers of my hand to count the DACs that can compete with mine to my ears, regardless the price (I currently work on a new DAC that may compete with mine).
My taste may differ from some others, but I am very satisfied by my CD Transport & DAC: the level of detail, the transparency, the fluidity and "the musicians are in house"  feeling associated with a highly analogic kind of reproduction, are a pure pleasure for me.

So going to the vinyl has not been an evidence, because I am difficult to satisfy: most of the time, when I lesson to a turntable, I have the feeling that something is missing compared to my carefully tuned digital source.

I am not particularly disturbed by the scratches or noises generatd by the vinyl, but I often miss the transparency, the dynamics, the "life" provided by my digital source, of course with excellent CDs only..

So the test of the new REGA RP10 has been approached with a lot of circonspection, because despite what we all read about the sonic qualities of the vinyl, I have rarely be "stucked" by the turntables and I have « missed something » most of the time when I have lessoned to the turntables even if I fully recognized the vinyl qualities that make it superior to most of the CD based systems (but not always to mine....).

Once the RP10 has been installed and its platter put on it, I took a few minutes to « comtemplate » it: this REGA RP10 is a beautiful object. Its apparent simplicity and its black piano color with a metal tonearm generates something « sexy ». It is not as massive as most of its competitors, but it looks sexy to me...

Well, time has come to put on the first vinyl. Let us choose a high quality one, just to avoid any bad surprise due to a poor recording... I have chosen a Bossa Nova style: Stan GETZ / Laurindo ALMEIDA, 180gr, Pure analogue Audiophile Mastering, Verve V6-8665.

Turned the 33rpm on, and slowly approached the beautiful SUMIKO Blackbird to the vinyl, feeling internally « what will be the musicality of this system that costs around 5,500€ with the cartridge and the phono preamp ? ». My CD Transport alone costs twice...

Pull down the crank and the SUMIKO Blackbird softly touched the vinyl.

►►► At this moment my heart increased slightly its speed because I feared to be disappointed by this turntable that so many people around the world believes in.

he first notes went through the speakers.

My very first reaction was : « Waouh ! My God ! How is it possible to get this out of a so old record (4-5 decades) ? ....

To be honest, I expected to be disappointed compared to my digital source. But ... definitely no.

There is the feeling that the musicians are in the room. The music flows out of the speakers with ease, with no barriers. The subtle differences in the notes come to you with the same evidence than a big bass explosion : simply evident. No fat, no doubt.
Oh yes, one doubt: where is the turntable ??

The soudstage is excellent: as large as with my best CDs...

There is no scratches or noises like I expected with the vinyls. The ability to retrieve the details stored into the disc provided by this RP10, and its RB2000 tonearm, clearly driving with ease the SUMIKO Blackbird  belongs to the high end class. In addition the sound is pure; natural; with no pollution due to these noises.

The bandwith. I expected the bandwith to be reduced compared to the performance reached by my perfectly tuned digital source. I was wrong again: the bandwith is excellent, unexpected, far above my best expectations. The high frequencies goes really high with ease, beauty and a large variety of nuances.
The bass frequencies, that I expected to be less present or with less impact than on the CD, were simply astonishing. So much energy from a vinyl, with so much detail: I just cannot believe it. The previous REGA turntables did not always receive excellent feedback for their bass reproduction, but this RP10 plays in another league.  I know that my system do provide good bass, but so much energy from a vinyl is difficult to believe...The competitors should begin to be anxious...

The RP10 combo draw you into the music. When different instruments play, you can easily discern how the musicians play and you can focus on one of them, then switch to another one, just to get the pleasure of surfing from a musician to another. The notes of each instrument, for example the piano, are so clearly reproduced, with the air and the atmosphere around, with the meat around the bones, and an unexpected / terrific amount of nuances...

The word " analogic " gets its full dimension with this turntable and associated devices.

I ended the listening of this first vinyl with a strange feeling: I have been totally surprised, puzzled. Because so much music out of a vinyl makes you questionning yourself: because you simply lesson to the music and not to a system. You lesson to the music and have no question. No question.
The 2nd vinyl Stan GETZ / Joao GILBERTO, « The best of two worlds», 180gr,Audiophile Re-Mastering, Columbia PC33703 confirmed all the first impressions above.

The 3rd vinyl Stan GETZ with Guest artist Laurindo ALMEIDA, 180gr, VERVE V6-8665 is much better mastered than the two previous. On this vinyl the RP10 based system reaches an unexpected level of musicality with so much emotion and live music... This RP based system reproduced any difference in quality coming from the discs themselves.

The 4th vinyl Shoji YOKOUSHI Trio plus Yuri TASHIRO, « Greensleeves », TBM5011, has offered us a pure moment of pleasure. This vinyl is known to have an excellent mastering and the musicians do not have to be introduced unless your are not familiar with this remarkable trio (in this case, you should lesson to it by the end of the weekend !)... The overall quality of sound delivered by this vinyl is even better than the 3 previous ones. The weight of the cymbals played by Hajime ISHIMATSU, the energy of the bass,  made alive by Kunimitsu INABA, are so realistic that these instruments make a whole set bwith the Shoji YOKOUCHI guitar(s). We simple had the feeling that the music and the musicians were in the room, but before all, that the music flows out of the speakers with an incredible ease. Everu nuance of the Yuri TASHIRO organ is evident to understand: the genius of this man becomes simply evident. Listening to the music when it has so much ease is simply a moment of peace during which I have forgotten everything else. This combo sounds right.

This is one of the very few times that I have lessoned to the music without asking myself "is it enough detailed ?", "is the bass good enough ?", "is there too much of this or not enough of that ?....". Only the best turntables can provide you with this feeling.

On May 1st, we have listened to the 5th vinyl, another good recording, the DENON JAZZ in New-York, ST-6004. The quality of the recording is similar to the Shoji YOKOUSHI Trio « Greensleeves » but is not equal on every track of the vinyl.
The 1st track is Franck Foster & The Loud Minority, « Five Four Six ». This track is a good illustration of what the REGA RP10 can achieve on the high energy instruments such as the trumpet for example. With the SUMIKO Blackbird and the CLEARAUDIO in the chain, you get an unexpected level of energy on the trumpet, violent attacks if the musician played like this, and a sort of continuity between the notes that no CD player can achieve (unless maybe 3 or 4 on the planet but only with exceptional CDs, and we are even not sure !). It can be violent but it always remains analogic with a total lack of stress.
The 3rd track is played by Tommy FLANAGAN: « Alone too long ». Well... prepare yourself to be more than surprised... This track is a pure beauty: the piano is so fluid that I was smiling and laughting during the listening session, like if I was sharing the happiness of the musician, obliged to recognized that he is simply a genius in playing piano with so ease ! Ease and Fluidity are just so evident that you simply lesson to the music: no question, no doubt, no thoughts: just share the musician pleasure.
The 7th track contains both piano and bass, Jo JONES « Alpha blues ». The piano is once again so fluid that you just have to share the musician genius and pleasure. You can perfectly hear the impact of the hammer on the piano strings. Regarding the bass, it is alive, varied, articulated...

I have just stopped questioning myself, and I got a lot of internal peace because of that. This is the definition of the musical pleasure, isn't it ?.
The last thing that I noticed during this first listening session: when I push the volume up, I got the feeling that the music plays louder without any disturbance, like if the source was totally independant of the speakers. You can play as loud as you can, the RP10 will never be disturbed ! Another benefit of the low mass design ? nobody knows because the (excellent) high mass turntables perform similarly, but at least it proves that the innovative REGA approach is another serious alternative...

This RP10 has totally changed my expectations about what the vinyl can deliver below 6,000$: I knew that this result can be achieved with the state of the art turntables costing the price of a sport car, the kind of devices that cost a fortune, but not with a 5,500€ system !

And there is simply NO digital source that can compete with this RP10 / SUMIKO / CLEARAUDIO combo in this price range. No one.

Tweaks:

The result are easy to evaluate: the musicality becomes immediately better, with more detail and clarity, I men that every note is more separated than the others. There is no doubt for us that there is a room for improvement by replacing the original platter mat by a new one made of leather like the abovementioned.


We have detected no improvement, and despite the reasonnable price, we see no interest to invest in this kind of accessory on a RP10. We even ask ourselves if the result is not sligthly better without a record clamp.... We will perform a deeper test in the coming days with a few other vinyls, but for the time being this kind of accessory has no interest with a RP10.


Mr Roy GANDY: you have achieved an incredible turntable ! You have followed a different route, applied different principles for the design, but the result is there. You have proven that there is not only one approach (i.e the high mass turntables) but that the opposite one (i.e low mass) can compete with the best.
Your new baby, the RP10, plays in another league than the previous REGA models.
The other manufacturers now face a challenge: how will they compete with the RP10 in the same price range ? A serious challenge I say...

  • Exceptional price/musicality ratio
  • Outstanding transparency, immediacy, fluidity of the reproduction, without any fat
  • Excellent bass with energy, punch, detail and nuances
  • Excellent high frequencies with a lot of nuances
  • Excellent detail retrieval from the grooves
  • Excellent RB2000 tonearm regarding the price
  • Cymbals, piano, guitar, saxophone,..., are full of detail and matter, proving an excellent 2nd harmonic management
  • Superb voices, male and female, without delivering a sound with « too much sugar » like some other well known turntables/cartridges
  • Provides the feeling of freedom and openess of the music
  • Very good soundstage
  • The rythm is very good, and remains like this even if a lot of instruments are engaged
  • The differences between the perfectly mastered vinyls and the others are immediately audible: the bests will transport you to the heaven, but the worst will just sound as they are...
  • No noise, no clicks, no scratch: the RB2000 drives the SUMIKO with ease. A beautiful piece of engineering...
  • Excellent cartridge tracking, at least with the SUMIKO Blackbird
  • The look is sexy with its black piano glossy color
  • You listen to the music and ask no question except: where is the turntable ?
  • There is no CD player that can compete with this RP10 / SUMIKO Blackbird / CLEARAUDIO Basic + combo in this price range.


Cons:

  • The 4 small cartridge connectors at the end of the RB2000 tonearm seem too fragile: we expected 4 more robust connectors
  • The RP10 performs better with the platter mat than without: but the original platter mat is very sensitive to the electrostatic energy and does not seem of a very high quality. Therefore we believe that we should rise the overall performance with a better platter mat (we will test a few in the coming weeks)
  • It seems, but we are not sure at all, that the RB2000 internal cable cannot be replaced because there is a sort of silicone glue inside the tonearm ►►► this will have to be confirmed or denied by the REGA importer or a REGA representative. Provided that the RP10 target the vinyl enthusiasts, some of them would like to upgrade the tonearm cable, and even if REGA has never been a fan of the upgrades, this point should be clarified in the future.
  • If you own mainly or only CDs, prepare yourself to switch to vinyl after having lessoned to this RP10 and associated SUMIKO Blackbird / CLEARAUDIO Basic Plus: with excellent vinyl, your CDplayer /DAC will not be able to compete even if it costs 20K€. Exceptions to this will be counted on the fingers of one hand.
  • The look is less impressive than the more massive turntables one: your girlfriend might be more impressed with a more massive turntable...but your ears may not.
  • This RP10 will probably be a nightmare for every competitor in this price range...and even at a much higher price point ! ► REGA has no pity for its competitors...smile
